Tribe tennis tops Hemlock, 6-2

(TCC Photo by Keith Salisbury) CHESANING – The Chesaning girls tennis team got the season off on the right foot with a 6-2 win over Hemlock last Monday.

With 10 returning varsity players, including all four at singles and the No.1 doubles team, the Lady Indians are looking for a big season, coach Tom Teal said.

Chesaning won all four singles matches. No. 1 Erica Toma lost the first set 7-5 but came back to win the next two 6-1, 6-0. Also winning were No. 2 Mackenzie Smith, 6-2,6-2; No. 3 Amy Beckman 6-2, 6-3; and No. 4 Andrea Rickerd 2-6, 7-6, 7- 5.

In doubles Olivia Thurston and Kalie Gross at No. 1 won 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, while the No. 3 team of Hannah Dankert and Natasha Pickering won 7-6, 7-6.

“We have 10 returning varsity players out of 12 this year,” said Coach Teal. “All four singles are in the same position as last year, and our number one doubles team is the same.”

Captains this year are Kali Gross and Olivia Thurston. In addition, former four-year Chesaning varsity player Christina Cannon joins Teal as an assistant coach.
