(TCC Photo by Keith Salisbury) EAST LANSING – New Lothrop won its first-ever baseball state title on Saturday, June 14, in convincing fashion with a 5-0 victory over Beal City at MSU’s McLane Stadium.

Senior lefty Grant Steinborn tossed all seven innings, scattering seven hits en route to a shut-out. He struck out four and walked two.

The Hornets pounded out 10 hits, led by Quentin Taylor and Brodie Bennett, who each registered two hits and an RBI. One of Taylor’s hits was a double, which came towards the end of a threerun uprising by NL in the top of the fourth.

Bennett knocked in the first run of the game in the top of the second with a single and the score remained at 1-0 until the Hornets used three hits and capitalized on an Aggies error to go ahead, 4-0.

Taylor doubled while Kyle Chappelle and Steve Garza each singled in the decisive fourth frame. An error and walks to Ben Muron and Bennett added fuel to the fourth inning fire for New Lothrop.

Beal City came into the title game with a 36-4 mark. New Lothrop (35-6) returned home with a state championship plaque, its first in the sport of baseball, and the 22nd state crown in its storied athletic program.
