Chesaning grapplers bow to Birch Run 54-18 in Division 3 district finals

CHESANING – The Chesaning varsity wrestlers saw their team season come to an end Wednesday night with a 54-18 Division 3 district final loss to visiting Birch Run.

The Indians opened the evening with an 80-0 shellacking of Bridgeport in the semifinals. The Panthers defeated Frankenmuth 69-12 in their semifinal contest.

“For the most part, we wrestled pretty well,” said Chesaning coach Jeremy Reiber. “We won a few close matches and we lost a few close matches against a very skilled team tonight. They are currently ranked fourth in the state and they definitely brought their A game.” Reiber added, “We were hoping to add another district trophy to the trophy case this year, but we knew that was going to be a tough task against a team like Birch Run. Our team has improved so much from the beginning of the season, and I’m really proud of everyone on this team. We wish Bart Bennett and his team luck at regionals.” Double winners for the night were Esai Garcia (112 lbs.), Trevor Patterson (145), Justin Sloan (171) and Jacob Wright (189).

Suffering close loses were Kolin McAlpine (130), Kegan McAlpine (135) and Bret Helvie (285).

The Indians finished the team season with a 24-4 record, 7-1 in the Tri-Valley Conference Central Division, good for second place.
