MAPLE GROVE TWP. – A downed power line in Maple Grove Township caused power outages and safety concerns for two homes on the morning of Monday, June 20, requiring the assistance from the Maple Grove Township Fire Department and Consumers Energy.

A large piece of farm equipment pulled a secondary power line off of a home when traveling north on Lincoln Rd. just north of Volkmer Rd. around 11:15 a.m., according to Maple Grove Township Fire Chief Pat Andres.

The accident broke two utility poles, pulled the secondary service line off of one home and caused the (still live) primary power line to hover just a few feet from the ground, Andres said.

The accident disrupted service to two houses, each on opposite sides of Lincoln Rd., that were attached to the same transformer.

Maple Grove firefighters cleared debris from the utility poles and helped secure the area before electric line workers arrived to the site around noon.

One of the residents used an oxygen tank so the department supplied the home with a generator until Consumers was able to restore service around 9:30 p.m. that evening.

Consumers Energy warns residents to stay at least 25 feet away from any downed power lines. Residents should never touch wires or come into contact with anything the wire is touching especially standing water, metal objects like fences, or tree limbs or debris as it can conduct dangerous amounts of electricity.

“Even though that sagging or broken wire on the ground isn’t sparking, it can still be “live” with a deadly amount of electricity,” according to consumersenergy.com.

In the case of a downed power line or a wire crossing a road or driveway, residents should avoid the area, keep others and pets away and contact Consumers Energy at (800) 477-5050 or local law enforcement.
