Lady Hornets overcome slow start to beat Grandville CC, 50-41

NEW LOTHROP – After a rough first quarter last Tuesday, New Lothrop’s varsity girls’ basketball team turned it up a notch to rally for a 50-41 non-league win over visiting Grandville Calvin Christian.

The Lady Hornets sputtered to an 8-4 deficit after the first eight minutes of play before rallying to take a 21-20 edge at intermission. NL then outscored CC by a 29-21 margin in the second half to secure the win.

“We pulled it together in that second quarter and forced some turnovers with our press,” assessed New Lothrop coach James Perry. “It was a very physical game, but we were able to pull ahead and hit some big free throws along the way.”

The Lady Hornets only sank 13 of 48 shots from the field for a lowly 27%, but NL sank 21 of 31 free throws to cash in at the charity stripe.

Caitlyn Bruff led the offense with 14 points to go with four rebounds and four steals. Lauryn Tithof added 11 points and four steals.

“Lauryn played a great game as she was forced to play extended minutes due to others in foul trouble and she was up to the challenge,” commented Coach Perry.

Sydney Pope recorded nine points and five rebounds while Samantha Kulhanek and Charleigh Birchmeier split 10 markers evenly. Kulhanek also grabbed five caroms.

Brooke Wenzlick registered four points, three rebounds and three steals and Alex Bedrosian finished with a pair of points to go with five rebounds.
