New Lothrop opens New Year with split of cage contests

New Lothrop’s varsity boys’ basketball team opened its 2018 portion of the season this past week by splitting a pair of contests.

The Hornets clobbered visiting Morrice on Monday, 63-34, then fell at Mt. Morris the next day by a 60-52 count. This past Friday’s scheduled game at Atherton was postponed due to weather conditions.

Nick Johnson nearly matched the entire scoring output by Morrice on Monday as he poured in 32 points. Johnson swished five treys as the Hornets built a 50-18 cushion by the end of the third quarter.

Jacob Graves canned 10 markers for NL and Avery Moore chipped in with nine points. Kollin Lienau added six points.

Johnson again put up big numbers the next night against Mt. Morris. The Hornets led for most the evening and still clung to a 40-39 edge heading into the fourth quarter, but the host Panthers utilized a 21-12 scoring advantage over the final eight minutes of play to steal the decision.
