St. Charles cage guys drop squeaker to St. Louis, 49-44

ST. CHARLES – In a contest that was even closer than the final score indicates, St. Charles’ varsity boys’ basketball team dropped a 49-44 decision to visiting St. Louis last Tuesday.

The Bulldogs led, 23-22, at halftime and trailed just 34-32 at the end of the third frame before finally succumbing.

“St. Louis slowed down the pace of the game and our defense wasn’t very good as we were late to rotate and gave up too many lay-ups,” assessed STC mentor Brad Henry. “I give St. Louis credit because they executed their offense and played solid half-court defense. But I think our guys are fully aware that they did not play with the necessary energy tonight.”

Cody Whiren helped keep the game close as he scored 14 points and dished out three assists. Austin Kelly chipped in with 10 points and 4 rebounds while Matt Benson finished with 8 points and 5 boards. Nick Housey was cited by Coach Henry for providing a spark off the bench with his hustle and defensive effort. Housey also logged a pair of steals on the evening.

STC now stands at 4-4 overall.
