New Lothrop Elementary teacher Michelle Perry was named VFW Teacher of the Year in November of last year. The kindergarten teacher accepted her award for the regional title on Jan. 13 and most recently, Teacher of the Year at the state level.

Perry accepted her award during the VFW’s Mid-Winter Conference Convention on Jan. 20.

During the banquet, held in Kalamazoo, the VFW announced Teacher of the Year recipients at the elementary, middle and high school levels, according to New Lothrop Elementary School Principal Michelle Barrett.

In addition, student winners of the written competitions Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen, were also announced, she said.

Perry received a $500 check, a Teacher of the Year jacket, and a glass apple plaque.

“We are so proud of Mrs. Perry. It’s great to see that not only was she recognized within our community, but also at the state level,” Barrett said.

“We’ve had two teachers advance to the state level in the past two years; this is a great accomplish for the New Lothrop community. We truly have some great teachers educating our children.”
