STC bowlers finish second in state

BATTLE CREEK – St. Charles’ varsity boys’ bowling team reached the championship match against Bronson before losing, earning the Bulldogs second place in Michigan after competition in the Division 4 Team State Championship Tournament held at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek on March 2.

For St. Charles, it was the second State Runner-Up finish in the last three years. The ‘Dawgs also placed second in the 2016 state finals.

STC had to fight all day long to reach the showdown for the state crown as they narrowly edged out Rogers City in the qualifying round.

Coming in as the 8th seed in the 8-team elimination series, the Bulldogs faced the number one seed and defending state champions Vandercook Lake in the quarterfinals.

STC posted a 1295-1218 win over Vandercook Lake and moved on to a semifinal match against New Lothrop, where the ‘Dawgs beat the fifth-seeded Hornets, 1213 to 1131, setting up a championship showdown with number three-seeded Bronson.

St. Charles was sharp in the title contest, rolling a 1283, but Bronson turned in the highest score of the day in match play with a 1354 that earned them their first state bowling title in school history.

STC was led by Michael Pratt (255) and Alex Dittenber (200) in the final game.

“I am extremely proud of our guys and how they competed all season long,” said STC coach Mark Faupel. “They never quit and battled to the end, making clutch shots, supporting each other and staying in control all day. We made enough good shots – Bronson made more. We did not lose the match, Bronson won it and we made them earn it.”
